This seemingly mundane plant’s history is one of luxury, ostentation, and envy. The grass lawn first became popular among wealthy land owners in 17th century England. Upkeep was so costly, the display of a lawn was a grand display of luxury. These grass lawns were so envied that the style was copied in America, where suburban Americans have long recognized the lush lawn as a symbol of stature and accomplishment.
